명심보감(明心寶鑑)은 어린이들의 인격 수양을 위한 한문 교양서로서 고려 시대 충렬왕 때인 1305년 고려 예문관대학교의 저명한 학자인 추적(秋適)이 163편의 좋은 속담, 금언(金言) 등 중국 고전에 따라 어린이 기본 도서로 편찬하였다. 이 책속에는 계선, 천명, 순명, 치가 등 19편으로 구성되어 있고 학습자들을 위해 배열하고 쉽게 배울 수 있게 편집되었다.

이 책은 유불선의 사상을 집대성한 책으로 조선시대 교육의 기초가 된 서당의 어린 아이들을 위한 교재로 사용되었다. 사실 고전이 단순한 문장으로 구성된 한자 학습을 돕는 역할만을 원했다면 그 위상은 불가능했을 것이다. 간결하고 우아한 문장에서 선인들의 귀한 말과 글이 본문을 읽는 아이들의 미덕의 디딤돌이 되었고, 나아가 삶의 잠재된 말로서의 역할을 톡톡히 해냈다.

여러 세대의 이러한 지혜는 유교, 불교, 도교와 같은 아시아 전통 사상의 실상을 잘 보여준다. 다시 말해, 이 책은 어떤 한 가지 생각에 치우치지 않고 인간의 보편적 윤리를 강조한다. 인간으로서 살아가는 본래의 선한 마음을 강조하며 스스로 아는 미덕과 겸손함을 갖기에 충분하다. 그런 덕을 갖춰야 한다는 말은 통치자의 교양서와 세상을 구하는 교훈의 역할을 하기에 충분하다.
