Summary
The play was performed by Mr. Paris in Paris. It starts at Jourdain's house. Jourdain is a middle-aged "bourgeois" whose father became rich as a cloth merchant. Stupid Jourdain now has one goal in life: to move beyond this middle-class background and be recognized as aristocrats. For this, he orders a nice new suit and is very happy when the tailor's boy taunts him as "my Lord". Despite his old age, he becomes devoted to learning the gentlemanly techniques of fencing, dance, music and philosophy...
