Philoktetes is a play by Sophocles (Aeschylus and Euripides each survived, but wrote each). The play was written during the Peloponnesian War. It is one of the seven surviving tragedies of Sophocles. It was first performed in the city of Dionysia in 409 BC and reached number one. The story begins during the Trojan War (after most of the events of the Iliad, but before the Trojan Horse). Neoptolemus and Odysseus attempt to bring an archer, a disabled Philoctetes, from the island of Lemnos to Troy.
