Electra is an ancient Greek tragedy written by Euripides. It is presumed to be a tragedy written in the mid-410s B.C. or before 413 B.C.
A few years before the play, at the beginning of the Trojan War, the Greek general Agamemnon offered her daughter Iphigenia as a sacrifice to appease the goddess Artemis. His sacrifice allowed the Greek army to sail to Troy, but deeply angered his wife, Clytemnestra. Ten years later, when Agamemnon returns from the Trojan War, Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus murder him.

A few years after Agamemnon's death, suitors begin asking for Electra's hand in marriage. Fearing that Electra's child might avenge her, Clytemnestra and Aegisthus marry her off to a farmer in Mycenae. Her farmer was kind to her and respected her surname and her virginity. In exchange for his kindness, Electra helps her husband with the housework, but Electra resents being kicked out of her house and laments to the choir about the struggles caused by her drastic change in social status...
