Euripides is one of the three great classical Athenian tragedians, the other two being Aeschylus and Sophocles. Some ancient scholars attribute 95 plays to him, of which 18 to 19 remain as full works. Euripides had an innovative influence on theater, which had a profound influence on drama until modern times, particularly in presenting traditional and mythological heroes as ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. This new approach led him to pioneering developments adapted by later writers to comedies, some of which are romance plays.
