THE STUDY OF NATURE is a book on natural history first published in 1768 by the French philosopher and writer Voltaire. Here Voltaire advocates Preformationism, the idea that organisms develop from smaller versions of themselves. He develops the idea of a supreme being and that many features of the natural world are designed to benefit people, including noses that smell and mountains that shape the landscape.

Summary
There is no doubt that everything in the world is governed by fate. My own life is convincing evidence of this doctrine. One of my favorite English lords promised me to make a living from his gifts. An 80-year-old old incumbent has died accidentally, and I go immediately to London to remind the Earl of his promise.
