Summary
At the beginning of her novel, her father, Flora, a disgraced financier, dies leaving her alone and destitute. Captivated by Flora's beauty and her innocence, Captain Anthony protects her and helps her start a new life. But their relationship becomes complicated when Captain Anthony's estranged wife reappears and threatens to destroy their new happiness.
The second part of the novel takes place years after Flora has married and started a family, when Captain Anthony reappears in her life, and their relationship becomes more complex and nuanced as she grapples with her past and present desires.
