"Heart of Darkness" is a novella written by Joseph Conrad, first published in 1899. The story is set in the Congo Free State (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and follows a sailor named Charles Marlow's journey back to the Congo.
The novel deals with themes such as imperialism, the human spirit, and the consequences of power. Conrad's vivid descriptions of the African landscape and his complex characters, especially the enigmatic Kurtz, add to the interest of reading.

Summary
As Marlow goes deeper into the jungle, he becomes increasingly disturbed by the brutal treatment of African natives by European colonial powers. He also becomes obsessed with finding a man named Kurtz, a brilliant but enigmatic ivory dealer.
As Marlow approaches Kurtz's remote trading post, he must confront the darkness and corruption at the heart of human nature, as well as the devastating effects of colonialism and the moral corruption of European civilization.
