▶ 소설은 크리스토퍼 콜럼버스(Christopher Columbus, 1450~1506)가 신대륙을 향해 떠난 1492년, 이탈리아 피렌체를 배경으로 펼쳐집니다. 로몰라 데 바르디(Romola de' Bardi)는 피렌체의 저명한 학자 바르도 데 바르디(Bardo de' Bardi)의 딸입니다. 지성과 미모를 갖춘 로몰라는 아버지의 연구를 돕는 젊은 이탈리아계 그리스 청년 학자 티토 멜레마(Tito Melema)와 사랑에 빠지게 되었는데…. 아버지의 명을 어기고 도미니카회 수사가 된 남매 디노 데 바르디(Dino de' Bardi), 일명 프라 루카(Fra Luca)의 경고에도 불구하고, 티토와 약혼합니다. 벌써부터 불길한 예감이 들기 시작하는군요.

▶ 로몰라와 티토가 맺어진지 1년 반이 지난 1494년 11월, 프랑스-이탈리아 전쟁(Italian War of 1494~1495)이 발발합니다. 피렌체가 프랑스 침략자들로 인해 쑥대밭이 된 가운데 티토는 자신의 양아버지 발다사르 칼보(Baldassarre Calvo)와 마주치게 됩니다. 갖은 고생에도 불구하고, 목숨을 건진 끝에 양아들을 만난 발다사르는 공포에 질려 그와의 관계를 부인하는 티토의 모습을 보고 분노합니다. 가까스로 탈출에 성공한 발다사르는 양아들 티토에 대한 원한으로 불타오르기 시작합니다.

▷ 두 남자는 죽음처럼 말없이 서로를 바라보았습니다. 발다사레(Baldassarre)는 어둡고 맹렬했으며 벨벳을 입은 팔을 더러워진 낡은 손으로 꽉 움켜쥐었습니다. 티토는 뺨과 입술이 온통 핏기가 없고 공포에 사로잡혀 있었습니다. 그들에게는 긴 시간처럼 느껴졌습니다. 그것은 한 순간에 불과했습니다.

▶ 양국 간의 격렬한 전쟁 속에서 한갓 개인일 뿐인 로몰라와 티토의 삶은 복잡다단하게 교차하기 시작합니다. 종교 개혁가 지롤라모 사보나롤라(Girolamo Savonarola, 1452~1498)의 부상과 메디치 가문(Medicis)의 권력 투쟁으로, 당시의 정치적, 종교적 격변을 배경으로, 로몰라는 쉽지 않은 선택에 몰리게 됩니다. 이 와중에 티토의 진면목을 알게 된 로몰라는 그를 떠났고, 사보나롤라(Savonarola)를 적극적으로 후원하고, 피렌체의 지치고 병든 자들을 돌보며 혼란한 하루하루를 충실하게 보내고자 노력합니다. 과연 전쟁의 화염에 휩싸인 로몰라의 운명은 어디로 향할는지….
