¡°Wrecked but not Ruined¡± is a novel written in 1880 by 19th-century Scottish author and adventurer R. M. Ballantyne, set in the Canadian outback.
R.M. Ballantyne (1825-1894) was a Scottish artist and prolific author of mostly children's fiction. Born in Edinburgh, Ballantyne was the ninth of ten children. At the age of 16, Ballantyne moved to Canada, where he worked for the Hudson's Bay Company, where he traveled the country in the fur trade. After his father died in 1847, he returned to Scotland and began his literary career in earnest, writing over 100 children's adventure books during his lifetime. His stories like 'The Coral Island' and 'The Young Fur Traders' were hugely popular, and many of his stories were based on his own experiences traveling across Canada.
His representative works include "The Coral Island" and "The Gorilla Hunters", which were very popular in England at the time. In addition, he was interested in natural science and wrote a lot of related contents in books.

Summary
Not so long ago, a group of simple, low-profile wooden houses stood on the north bank of St. Lawrence Bay. The area around them was vast and uninhabited. The road to them was a difficult one. It encased the rugged cliffs, and under its shelter lay houses as if perched for protection from the cold winds and the snowdrifts that took special delight there. This group of buildings was, at the time of our writing, an outpost for the hardy pioneers of civilization, the fur traders, and we owe them principally for opening the way to the northern wilderness of the United States. The outpost was named Cliff after the bold cliff near the base it stood on. A slender stockade surrounded it, and a flagpole rose from its center. And a rusty old ship's carronade stood defiantly at the front door. Because of these warlike adjuncts, the place was sometimes called "Fortress".
