Summary
The story begins with two men, Bill Totts and Henry, hired as sailors aboard a schooner. The ship is moored off the coast of an unnamed island in the Pacific Northwest. Bill is a strong and experienced sailor and Henry is a new recruit and lacks the same level of skill.
While exploring the island one day, the two men encounter a large male sea lion. Bill, a seasoned hunter, sees this as a lucrative hunting opportunity and decides to kill the sea lion for its valuable hide and oil, but Henry fears the creature's size and power.
As the story progresses, Bill becomes more and more obsessed with hunting sea lions. He sets traps and meticulously plans his strategy, ignoring Henry's worries and fears. Things escalate when Bill decides to engage in a one-on-one fight with a sea lion he sees as a formidable foe.
