Summary
The story centers on the character Darrell Standing, a former college professor. He is imprisoned in California's San Quentin State Penitentiary and sentenced to life imprisonment for manslaughter. While in prison, Standing experiences extreme physical and psychological torture. He is placed in solitary confinement and forced to wear a straitjacket known as the "Jacket".
In pain, Standing experiences astral projection and discovers a unique ability to transcend physical limitations. These out-of-body experiences allow him to access memories and experiences from previous lives.
