Summary
The story centers on the character Darrell Standing, a former college professor. He is imprisoned in California's San Quentin State Penitentiary and sentenced to life imprisonment for manslaughter. While in prison, Standing experiences extreme physical and psychological torture. He is placed in solitary confinement and forced to wear a straitjacket known as the "Jacket".
In pain, Standing experiences astral projection and discovers a unique ability to transcend physical limitations. These out-of-body experiences allow him to access memories and experiences from previous lives. Through these episodes, Standing reproduces various past lives in various historical backgrounds from ancient times to the present... .
As he explores his past incarnations, Standing becomes "The Star Rover", a term used to describe someone who can explore other lives and experiences beyond the physical world...
