"At Fault" is Kate Chopin's first novel, published in 1890, and is lesser known than her more famous novel, "The Awakening." The novel is set in Louisiana's post-Civil War era and deals with themes of race, class, and social expectations.
Unlike 'Awakening', which received much criticism for her exploration of female sexuality, 'By the Wrong' did not receive much attention when it was released. It was not until the late 20th century that the novel began to gain more attention and recognition as scholars and readers explored Kate Chopin's lesser-known works.

Summary
The story revolves around the life of Therese Lafirme, a young biracial woman raised by her wealthy and privileged white stepfather, David Hosmer. Therese's biological mother was an African woman who had an affair with David Hosmer before her death. The novel does a good job of conveying issues of racial identity and Therese's complex place in society as a person of mixed heritage.

As the novel progresses, Therese is torn between her feelings for two very different men: David Hosmer, her stepfather, and Laurent Nancanou, a handsome and charming young man who works on David's farm. Love triangles allude to the complexity of desires and social expectations, especially in the context of race and class during that time period.
