▶ At first sight it may seem superfluous to speak of thrift and independence to men of your race, and in a University that produced Duncan of Ruthwell and Chalmers. I admit it. No man carries coals to Newcastle?to sell; but if he wishes to discuss coal in the abstract, as the Deacon of Dumfries discussed love, he will find Newcastle knows something about it. ▶ Independence means, “Let every herring hang by its own head.” It signifies the blessed state of hanging on to as few persons and things as possible; and it leads up to the singular privilege of a man owning himself. The desire for independence has been, up to the present, an ineradicable human instinct, antedating even the social instinct. Let us trace it back to its beginnings, so that we may not be surprised at our own virtue to-day. ▷ 독립이란 "모든 청어가 제 머리에 매달리게 하라"는 뜻입니다. 그것은 가능한 한 적은 사람과 사물에 매달리는 축복받은 상태를 의미합니다. 그리고 그것은 자신을 소유하는 사람의 특별한 특권으로 이어집니다. 독립에 대한 열망은 지금까지 사회적 본능보다 앞선 인간의 뿌리칠 수 없는 본능이었습니다. 오늘날 우리 자신의 미덕에 놀라지 않도록 그 기원을 거슬러 올라가 봅시다.
▶ In other words, we want to be independent of facts, and the younger we are, the more intolerant are we of those who tell us that this is impossible.
