Summary
Mame tells her mother about her new job as secretary to a spokesperson, a powerful and mysterious figure she has never seen and whose name is unknown. The spokesperson is a powerful silent man, and it is Ma's job to write his speeches and articles. Mame soon realizes that her spokesperson is an impostor and only interested in promoting herself and her own agenda.
The Spokesman is a master of circumlocution, and by using Mame's language, he is someone who can create a false image of himself as a wise and benevolent leader. The novel explores the relationship between Mame and her spokeswoman and shows Mame's gradual degradation as she approaches power.
