Summary
Hal quickly becomes disillusioned with the harsh realities of coal mining. Miners work long hours in hazardous conditions for low wages. They are often tricked by mine owners and give in to the whims of the company stores.
Hal joins the labor movement and helps organize strikes against mine owners. The strike is met with company violence, and Hal is arrested and beaten. However, the strike eventually succeeds and the miners get better working conditions.
