Summary
The novel is divided into three parts. The first part, "The Dream," follows Lithuanian immigrant Jurgis Rudkus, who arrives in Chicago with his family in search of a better life and starts a new life. Jurgis found a job at a meat packing plant, but the work was difficult and dangerous. He and his family live in a crowded apartment and struggle constantly to make ends meet.
The second part, ¡°The Jungle,¡± describes harsh working conditions in the meat packing industry. Sinclair exposes the factory's unsanitary conditions, which expose workers to disease and injury. He also describes how workers are exploited by employers who pay low wages and force them to work long hours.
The third part, " The Dream Deferred" describes the protagonist's descent into poverty and despair. He loses his job, his family crumbles, and he is eventually arrested for theft. The novel ends with Jurgis and his family leaving Chicago in search of a new beginning.
