¢º I. ROADS OF DESTINY. Whither these roads led he knew not. Either way there seemed to lie a great world full of chance and peril. And then, sitting there, his eye fell upon a bright star, one that he and Yvonne had named for theirs. That set him thinking of Yvonne, and he wondered if he had not been too hasty. Why should he leave her and his home because a few hot words had come between them? Was love so brittle a thing that jealousy, the very proof of it, could break it? Mornings always brought a cure for the little heartaches of evening. There was yet time for him to return home without any one in the sweetly sleeping village of Vernoy being the wiser. His heart was Yvonne's; there where he had lived always he could write his poems and find his happiness. ¢¹ I. ¿î¸íÀÇ °¥¸²±æ(Roads of Destiny). ¢º XIV. THE EMANCIPATION OF BILLY. In the old, old, square-porticoed mansion, with the wry window-shutters and the paint peeling off in discoloured flakes, lived one of the last of the war governors. The South has forgotten the enmity of the great conflict, but it refuses to abandon its old traditions and idols. In "Governor" Pemberton, as he was still fondly called, the inhabitants of Elmville saw the relic of their state's ancient greatness and glory. In his day he had been a man large in the eye of his country. His state had pressed upon him every honour within its gift. And now when he was old, and enjoying a richly merited repose outside the swift current of public affairs, his townsmen loved to do him reverence for the sake of the past. ¢¹ XIV. ºô¸®ÀÇ Çعæ(The Emancipation of Billy). ±¸ºÒ±¸ºÒÇÑ Ã¢¹® µ¡¹®°ú º¯»öµÈ Á¶°¢À¸·Î ¹þ°ÜÁø ÆäÀÎÆ®°¡ ÀÖ´Â ³°°í ¿À·¡µÈ ³×¸ð³ ÀúÅÿ¡ ¸¶Áö¸· ÀüÀï Ãѵ¶ Áß ÇÑ ¸íÀÌ »ì¾Ò½À´Ï´Ù. ³²ºÎ´Â ´ëºÐÀïÀÇ Àû°³½ÉÀ» ÀؾúÁö¸¸ ¿¾ ÀüÅë°ú ¿ì»óÀ» ¹ö¸®±â¸¦ °ÅºÎÇß½À´Ï´Ù. ¢º XXI. TWO RENEGADES. While the irregular and halting line was passing I made onslaught upon it and dragged from the ranks my friend Barnard O'Keefe, who had no right to be there. For he was a Northerner born and bred; and what should he be doing hallooing for the Stars and Bars among those gray and moribund veterans? And why should he be trudging, with his shining, martial, humorous, broad face, among those warriors of a previous and alien generation? ¢¹ XXI. µÎ ¹è½ÅÀÚ(Two Renegades). ºÒ±ÔÄ¢ÇÏ°í Áß´ÜµÈ ¼±ÀÌ Áö³ª°¡´Â µ¿¾È ³ª´Â ±×°Í¿¡ ¸Í°øÀ» °¡Çß°í ±×°÷¿¡ ÀÖÀ» ±Ç¸®°¡ ¾ø´Â ³» Ä£±¸ ¹ö³ªµå ¿ÀÅ°ÇÁ(Barnard O'Keefe)¸¦ ´ë¿¿¡¼ ²ø¾î³Â½À´Ï´Ù. ¿Ö³ÄÇÏ¸é ±×´Â Å¾°í ÀÚ¶õ ºÏºÎÀÎÀ̾ú±â ¶§¹®ÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ±×¸®°í ±×´Â ȸ»ö¿¡ Á׾´Â º£Å׶ûµé »çÀÌ¿¡¼ º°°ú ¹Ù(Stars and Bars)¸¦ À§ÇØ È¯È£ÇÏ¸ç ¹«¾ùÀ» ÇØ¾ß Çմϱî? ±×¸®°í ¿Ö ±×°¡ ±×ÀÇ ºû³ª°í, È£ÀüÀûÀ̸ç, À¯¸Ó·¯½ºÇÏ°í, ³ÐÀº ¾ó±¼·Î ÀÌÀü ¼¼´ë¿Í ¿Ü°è ¼¼´ëÀÇ Àü»çµé »çÀÌ¿¡¼ Å͹÷Å͹÷ °È°í ÀÖ¾î¾ß Çմϱî?
