¢º PREFACE. Of these Essays, which were written in 1829 and 1830, the fifth alone has been previously printed. The other four have hitherto remained in manuscript, because, during the temporary suspension of public interest in the species of discussion to which they belong, there was no inducement to their publication. ¢¹ ¸Ó¸®¸». 1829³â°ú 1830³â¿¡ ¾²¿©Áø ÀÌ ¼öÇÊ Áß ´Ù¼¸ ¹ø°¸¸ÀÌ ÀÌÀü¿¡ ÀμâµÇ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ³ª¸ÓÁö 4±ÇÀº ±×µéÀÌ ¼ÓÇÑ Åä·Ð À¯Çü¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ´ëÁßÀÇ °ü½ÉÀÌ ÀϽÃÀûÀ¸·Î ÁߴܵǴ µ¿¾È ÃâÆÇ¿¡ ´ëÇÑ À¯ÀÎÀÌ ¾ø¾ú±â ¶§¹®¿¡ Áö±Ý±îÁö ¿ø°í·Î ³²¾Æ ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù.

¢º A prejudice appears to exist in many quarters against the theory in question, on the supposition of its being opposed to one of the most valuable results of modern political philosophy, the doctrine of Freedom of Trade between nation and nation. The opinions now laid before the reader are presented as corollaries necessarily following from the principles upon which Free Trade itself rests. The writer has also been careful to point out, that from these opinions no justification can be derived for any protecting duty, or other preference given to domestic over foreign industry. But in regard to those duties on foreign commodities which do not operate as protection, but are maintained solely for revenue, and which do not touch either the necessaries of life or the materials and instruments of production, it is his opinion that any relaxation of such duties, beyond what may be required by the interest of the revenue itself, should in general be made contingent upon the adoption of some corresponding degree of freedom of trade with this country, by the nation from which the commodities are imported. ¢¹ ¹®Á¦ÀÇ ÀÌ·ÐÀÌ Çö´ë Á¤Ä¡Ã¶ÇÐÀÇ °¡Àå °¡Ä¡ ÀÖ´Â °á°ú Áß ÇϳªÀÎ ¹ÎÁ·°ú ¹ÎÁ· °£ÀÇ ¹«¿ªÀÇ ÀÚÀ¯ ¿øÄ¢¿¡ ¹Ý´ëµÈ´Ù´Â °¡Á¤ ÇÏ¿¡ ¿©·¯ ¹æ¸é¿¡¼ ÀÌ À̷п¡ ´ëÇÑ Æí°ßÀÌ Á¸ÀçÇÏ´Â °ÍÀ¸·Î º¸ÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ¢º ESSAY I. OF THE LAWS OF INTERCHANGE BETWEEN NATIONS; AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE GAINS OF COMMERCE AMONG THE COUNTRIES OF THE COMMERCIAL WORLD. Of the truths with which political economy has been enriched by Mr. Ricardo, none has contributed more to give to that branch of knowledge the comparatively precise and scientific character which it at present bears, than the more accurate analysis which he performed of the nature of the advantage which nations derive from a mutual interchange of their productions. Previously to his time, the benefits of foreign trade were deemed, even by the most philosophical enquirers, to consist in affording a vent for surplus produce, or in enabling a portion of the national capital to replace itself with a profit. ¢¹ ù ¹ø° ¿¡¼¼ÀÌ. ±¹°¡ °£ ±³·ùÀÇ ¹ýÄ¢; ±×¸®°í »ó¾÷ ¼¼°èÀÇ ±¹°¡µé »çÀÌ¿¡¼ »ó¾÷ ÀÌÀÍÀÇ ºÐ¹è. ¸®Ä«¸£µµ ¾¾¿¡ ÀÇÇØ Á¤Ä¡°æÁ¦ÇÐÀÌ Ç³¿ä·Î¿öÁø Áø¸® Áß¿¡¼, Á¤Ä¡°æÁ¦ÇÐÀÇ º»Áú¿¡ ´ëÇØ ±×°¡ ¼öÇàÇÑ º¸´Ù Á¤È®ÇÑ ºÐ¼®º¸´Ù ÇöÀç ±×°ÍÀÌ °®°í ÀÖ´Â ºñ±³Àû Á¤È®ÇÏ°í °úÇÐÀûÀÎ ¼º°ÝÀ» ÇØ´ç Áö½Ä ºÐ¾ß¿¡ ºÎ¿©ÇÏ´Â µ¥ ´õ ¸¹Àº °øÇåÀ» ÇÑ °ÍÀº ¾ø½À´Ï´Ù. ±¹°¡°¡ »ý»ê¹°ÀÇ »óÈ£ ±³È¯¿¡¼ ¾ò´Â ÀÌÁ¡. ±×ÀÇ ½Ã´ë ÀÌÀü¿¡´Â ÇØ¿Ü ¹«¿ªÀÇ ÀÌÁ¡Àº °¡Àå öÇÐÀûÀΠŽ±¸ÀÚ¿¡ ÀÇÇؼµµ À׿© »ý»ê¹°¿¡ ´ëÇÑ Åëdz±¸¸¦ Á¦°øÇϰųª ±¹°¡ ÀÚº»ÀÇ ÀϺθ¦ ÀÌÀ±À¸·Î ´ëüÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ°Ô ÇÏ´Â °ÍÀ¸·Î °£ÁֵǾú½À´Ï´Ù.
