Summary
Fahnes is a merchant from the planet Oryx. He is stationed at a trading post with Boles, a blunt and inflexible man obsessed with compliance. One day, Phanes witnesses the indigenous people's sacrifice. He is horrified by the ritual, but he knows he cannot intervene. This is because regulations regulating trade with indigenous peoples prohibit interfering with their customs and religion.
Fahnes is torn between conscience and duty. He knows he must abort his ritual, but he also knows that if he does so, he may be killed. In the end, he decides to follow the rules and not follow them...
