¢º PREFACE. Like many other works of mine, this playlet is a piece d'occasion. In 1905 it happened that Mr Arnold Daly, who was then playing the part of Napoleon in The Man of Destiny in New York, found that whilst the play was too long to take a secondary place in the evening's performance, it was too short to suffice by itself. I therefore took advantage of four days continuous rain during a holiday in the north of Scotland to write How He Lied To Her Husband for Mr Daly. In his hands, it served its turn very effectively. ¢¹ ¸Ó¸®¸». ³» ´Ù¸¥ ¸¹Àº ÀÛÇ°°ú ¸¶Âù°¡Áö·Î ÀÌ ±Øº»µµ ÇϳªÀÇ ÀÛÇ°ÀÔ´Ï´Ù. 1905³â ´º¿å¿¡¼ ¿¸° ¿î¸íÀÇ »ç¶÷ 1895(The Man of Destiny by George Bernard Shaw)¿¡¼ ³ªÆú·¹¿Ë ¿ªÀ» ¸Ã¾Ò´ø ¾Æ³îµå ´î¸®(Arnold Daly)´Â Àú³á °ø¿¬¿¡¼ 2Â÷ ÀÚ¸®¸¦ Â÷ÁöÇϱ⿡´Â ¿¬±ØÀÌ ³Ê¹« ±æÁö¸¸ ÃæºÐÇÏÁö ¾Ê±â¿¡´Â ³Ê¹« ª´Ù´Â »ç½ÇÀ» ¹ß°ßÇß½À´Ï´Ù. ±× ÀÚü·Î. ±×·¡¼ ³ª´Â ½ºÄÚƲ·£µå ºÏºÎ¿¡¼ ÈÞÀÏ µ¿¾È 4ÀÏ µ¿¾È °è¼Ó ³»¸®´Â ºñ¸¦ ÀÌ¿ëÇÏ¿© ´Þ¸® ¾¾(Mr Daly)¸¦ À§ÇØ ±×°¡ ³²Æí¿¡°Ô °ÅÁþ¸»À» ÇÑ ¹æ¹ýÀ» ½è½À´Ï´Ù. ±×ÀÇ ¼Õ¿¡¼ ±×°ÍÀº ¸Å¿ì È¿°úÀûÀ¸·Î ±× ¿ªÇÒÀ» ¼öÇàÇß½À´Ï´Ù.
¢º As she is dressed for the theatre; has spoilt, petted ways; and wears many diamonds, she has an air of being a young and beautiful woman; but as a matter of hard fact, she is, dress and pretensions apart, a very ordinary South Kensington female of about 37, hopelessly inferior in physical and spiritual distinction to the beautiful youth, who hastily puts down the mirror as she enters. ¢¹ ±×³à´Â ±ØÀå¿¡ °¥ ¿ÊÀ» ÀÔ°í ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. ¹ö¸©¾ø°í ¾ÖÁöÁßÁöÇÏ´Â ¹æ½ÄÀ» °¡Áö°í ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. ´ÙÀ̾Ƹóµå¸¦ ¸¹ÀÌ ´Þ°í ÀÖ¾î¼ Àþ°í ¾Æ¸§´Ù¿î ¿©¼ºÀÇ ºÐÀ§±â¸¦ dz±é´Ï´Ù. ±×·¯³ª ¾ö¹ÐÈ÷ ¸»ÇÏ¸é ±×³à´Â ¿ÊÂ÷¸²°ú °ÑÄ¡·¹¸¦ Á¦Ãĵΰí 37¼¼ Á¤µµÀÇ ¸Å¿ì Æò¹üÇÑ »ç¿ì½º Ä˽ÌÅÏ ¿©¼ºÀ̸ç, µé¾î¿Ã ¶§ ¼µÑ·¯ °Å¿ïÀ» ³»·Á³õ´Â ¾Æ¸§´Ù¿î û³â¿¡ ºñÇØ À°Ã¼Àû, Á¤½ÅÀû ±¸º°ÀÌ Àý¸ÁÀûÀ¸·Î ¿µîÇÕ´Ï´Ù.
¢º HE. I never thought of doing so, dearest: I know that these trivialities are nothing to you. What was I saying?oh yes. Instead of coming back here from the theatre, you will come with me to my home?now and henceforth our home?and in due course of time, when you are divorced, we shall go through whatever idle legal ceremony you may desire. I attach no importance to the law: my love was not created in me by the law, nor can it be bound or loosed by it. That is simple enough, and sweet enough, is it not? [He takes the flower from the table]. Here are flowers for you: I have the tickets: we will ask your husband to lend us the carriage to show that there is no malice, no grudge, between us.
