Summary
The novel revolves around the protagonist, Con Maxwell, who returns to her home planet of Foik Tesme after studying at a university in another world. Poiktesme was a military outpost during the Regime War and has since declined and is experiencing economic difficulties. Conn's father, along with other settlers, hopes to stimulate the planet's economy by finding a cache of military equipment left behind after the war.
Conn reveals that he learned about the existence of a legendary supercomputer called Merlin, which was built during the war and is believed to be hidden in Poictesme. According to legend, Merlin is said to have tremendous knowledge and the ability to calculate and predict future events. The settlers believe that finding Merlin can solve their problems and bring prosperity to Earth.
The search for Merlin sparks a series of adventures, political intrigue, and economic development, as the characters explore abandoned military bases and face various challenges while discovering truths about the war, Merlin, and themselves. The story addresses topics such as the impact of technology on society, the pursuit of knowledge, the consequences of war, and the resilience of the human spirit.
