Summary
Lord Lambeth is attracted to Bessie's innocence and purity. He believes that she is a 'natural woman' untouched by the complexities of European society. Bessie, on the other hand, is initially wary of Lord Lambeth. Because she is aware of the social and cultural differences between them and is not sure whether he is truly interested in her for his own sake or for her social status.
Despite their differences, Lord Lambeth and Bessie feel a strong attraction to each other, and they begin to spend more and more time together, eventually falling in love with each other...
