Summary
The novel begins with Marcher attending a gathering at a luxurious home, where he meets May Bartram, a woman he vaguely recognizes. They begin a conversation and Marcher is immediately fascinated by her intelligence and beauty.
May tells Marcher that she had a similar premonition that something surprising would happen to her, and Marcher is intrigued and begins to pursue May romantically.
Over the years, Marcher and May become close friends, and they confide in each other their deepest fears and desires. But Marcher doesn't tell May about her own curse...
