"The Birthplace" is a short story written by Henry James and first published in 1903. The novel is the story of Morris Gedge, a man hired as the caretaker of Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Throughout the story, James raises questions about the commodification of culture and history. It also addresses the topic of truth and fiction, and the boundaries between the two that are often blurred, especially when commercial interests are involved. The way Shakespeare's birthplace is treated serves as a critique of how society mishandles and misrepresents its cultural heritage.

Summary
At the core of the narrative is the conflict between commercialization and authenticity. Initially excited about his new job, Gedge quickly becomes disillusioned when he realizes that trustees and tourists are more interested in the myths, embellishments and made-up stories about Shakespeare's life than the historical truth. He is expected to present this false story to tourists, which annoys him... .
