Summary
As a young man, the narrator had a passionate love affair with a beautiful Italian woman named Countess Salvi, but this affair ended tragically when the countess died suddenly. The narrator was shocked by her death and left Florence to escape the pain of her memory.
Now, 25 years later, the narrator returns to Florence, taking his wife and daughter with him. Although he initially vows to avoid places that remind him of the Countess, he is eventually drawn back to the scene of their love.
As the speaker revisits places from his past, he begins to reflect on his life and choices. He realizes that he never truly got over the Countess and he wonders if he made the right choices in life...
