The story centers around the protagonist Spencer Bryden, who returns to New York after living in Europe for decades. Upon his return, he begins to explore the house he grew up in and becomes obsessed with his thoughts about what he might have become if he had not left America.

Summary
Brydon becomes obsessed with finding his "other self", whom he believes is still hiding somewhere in the city. He spends his nights wandering the empty rooms of his childhood home, convinced that he will eventually face his own ghost.
As Brydon's obsession grows, he begins to lose his grip on reality, he becomes increasingly isolated from the world around him and his mental state deteriorates. Eventually, Brydon is forced to face the truth about himself...
