¡°The Lesson of the Master¡± is another notable work by respected American author Henry James. This novella, published in 1888, deals with the life and thoughts of a writer named Paul Overt.
¡°Lessons of the Master¡± is a cautionary tale about the dangers of artistic ambition. James suggests that there is no easy answer to the question of whether art is worth the sacrifices it often demands.

Summary
A young and ambitious writer, Paul Obert, meets and becomes friends with the famous and successful novelist Henry St. George. Overt initially studied at St. Petersburg. Although fascinated by George's brilliance and artistry, he soon begins to see the darker side of the master's devotion to his craft.
George advises Overt to choose between art and life. He warns Overt that if he wants to achieve greatness as a writer, he must be willing to sacrifice everything else in his life. Saint George himself made this sacrifice, and as a result he became a lonely and isolated figure.
Overt is torn between his respect for St. George and his desire for a more fulfilling life...
