Summary
Dr. Austin Sloper, a wealthy and respected physician, lives in Washington Square with his daughter Catherine. Catherine is sweet, but her plain appearance and lack of the charm and wit of her deceased mother disappoints Dr. Sloper. Despite her timidity and lack of self-confidence, Catherine inherited a considerable inheritance from her mother, which makes her attractive to potential suitors.
When a handsome but penniless young man named Maurice Townsend begins courting Catherine, Dr. Sloper becomes suspicious of his intentions. Believing that Morris is only interested in Catherine's inheritance, Dr. Sloper tries to keep the two apart. Catherine, who loved her Maurice deeply, is torn between her loyalty to her father and her affection for her Maurice... .
