Summary
Agnes is the daughter of a poor fisherman and his hard-working wife. She is a kind and intelligent girl and is loved by everyone in the village. But Agnes' life is completely turned upside down when she is chosen to be the companion of the daughter of a wealthy noblewoman.
In her home as a noblewoman, Agnes is introduced to a world of luxury and privilege. She also introduces the Protestant Reformation ideas that were spreading throughout Italy at the time. Agnes is attracted to these new ideas, but she knows that embracing them is risky.
