¢º A SON OF THE GODS. A breezy day and a sunny landscape. An open country to right and left and forward; behind, a wood. In the edge of this wood, facing the open but not venturing into it, long lines of troops halted. The wood is alive with them, and full of confused noises: the occasional rattle of wheels as a battery of artillery goes into position to cover the advance; the hum and murmur of the soldiers talking; a sound of innumerable feet in the dry leaves that strew the interspaces among the trees; hoarse commands of officers. ¢¹ ½ÅÀÇ ¾Æµé 1907(A Son Of The Gods). »êµé¹Ù¶÷ÀÌ ºÎ´Â ³¯°ú ȭâÇÑ Ç³°æ. ¢º Detached groups of horsemen are well in front?not altogether exposed?many of them intently regarding the crest of a hill a mile away in the direction of the interrupted advance. For this powerful army, moving in battle order through a forest, has met with a formidable obstacle?the open country. The crest of that gentle hill a mile away has a sinister look; it says, Beware! Along it runs a stone wall extending to left and right a great distance. Behind the wall is a hedge; behind the hedge are seen the tops of trees in rather straggling order. Among the trees?what? It is necessary to know. ¢¹ µ¶¸³µÈ ±âº´ ¹«¸®µéÀÌ 1¸¶ÀÏ ¶³¾îÁø »ê²À´ë±â¿¡¼ ¿ÏÀüÈ÷ ³ëÃâµÇÁö´Â ¾Ê¾ÒÁö¸¸, ´ëºÎºÐÀÇ ±âº´µéÀÌ ¾ÕÀ» °¡·Î¸·°í ÀÖ´Â ¹æÇâÀ¸·Î ¿½ÉÈ÷ ¿òÁ÷ÀÌ°í ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. ½£À» µû¶ó ÀüÅõÀÇ Áú¼¸¦ ÁöÅ°¸ç À̵¿ÇÏ´Â ÀÌ °·ÂÇÑ ±º´ë´Â ¾öû³ Àå¾Ö¹°, Áï °³¹æµÈ ³ª¶ó¸¦ ¸¸³ª°Ô µÇ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. 1¸¶ÀÏ ¶³¾îÁø ¿Ï¸¸ÇÑ »ê²À´ë±â¿¡¼ ºÒ±æÇÑ ¸ð½ÀÀ» ÇÏ°í ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. ±× »ê²À´ë±â¸¦ µû¶ó Á¿ì·Î ¾ÆÁÖ ¸Õ °Å¸®¸¦ »¸¾î ÀÖ´Â µ¹´ãÀÌ ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. º® µÚ¿¡´Â ¿ïŸ¸®°¡ ÀÖ°í, ¿ïŸ¸® µÚ¿¡´Â ³ª¹« ²À´ë±âµéÀÌ ´Ù¼Ò Áú¼Á¤¿¬ÇÏ°Ô ÆîÃÄÁ® ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. ³ª¹«µé »çÀÌ¿¡ ¹¹¶ó°í¿ä? ¾Ë¾Æ¾ß ÇÒ ÇÊ¿ä°¡ ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù.

¢º A HORSEMAN IN THE SKY. One sunny afternoon in the autumn of the year 1861, a soldier lay in a clump of laurel by the side of a road in Western Virginia. He lay at full length, upon his stomach, his feet resting upon the toes, his head upon the left forearm. His extended right hand loosely grasped his rifle. But for the somewhat methodical disposition of his limbs and a slight rhythmic movement of the cartridge-box at the back of his belt, he might have been thought to be dead. He was asleep at his post of duty. But if detected he would be dead shortly afterward, that being the just and legal penalty of his crime. ¢¹ â°øÀÇ ±â¼ö 1889(A Horseman In The Sky). 1861³â °¡À» ¾î´À ȭâÇÑ ¿ÀÈÄ, ÇÑ ±ºÀÎÀÌ ¼ºÎ ¹öÁö´Ï¾ÆÀÇ ±æ°¡¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ¿ù°è¼ö µ¢¾î¸® ¼Ó¿¡ ´©¿ö ÀÖ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ±×´Â ¸ö Àüü¸¦ ¹è À§¿¡ ¾ñ°í ´©¿ö ÀÖ¾ú°í, ¹ßÀº ¹ß°¡¶ô À§¿¡ ¾ñÇô ÀÖ¾ú°í, ¸Ó¸®´Â ¿ÞÂÊ ÆÈ¶Ò À§¿¡ ÀÖ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ±×ÀÇ »¸Àº ¿À¸¥¼ÕÀº ´À½¼ÇÏ°Ô ¼ÒÃÑÀ» Áã°í ÀÖ¾ú´Ù. ±×·¯³ª ±×ÀÇ ÆÈ´Ù¸®ÀÇ ´Ù¼Ò ü°èÀûÀÎ ¹èÄ¡¿Í º§Æ® µÚÂÊ¿¡ Àִ ź¾à »óÀÚÀÇ ¾à°£ÀÇ ¸®µå¹ÌÄÃÇÑ ¿òÁ÷ÀÓÀ¸·Î ÀÎÇØ ±×´Â Á×Àº °ÍÀ¸·Î »ý°¢µÇ¾úÀ» ¼öµµ ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. ±×´Â ±Ù¹«Áö¿¡¼ ÀÚ°í ÀÖ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ±×·¯³ª ¹ß°¢µÈ´Ù¸é ±×´Â °ð »ç¸ÁÇÏ°Ô µÉ °ÍÀ̸ç, ÀÌ´Â ±×ÀÇ ¹üÁË¿¡ ´ëÇÑ Á¤´çÇÏ°í ¹ýÀû ó¹úÀÌ µË´Ï´Ù.
