Summary
It is a work that sharply analyzes the promiscuous and decadent upper class society before the French Revolution. The male protagonist, Viconte de Valmont, is a lustful man who, under the encouragement of the Marchioness, seduces the virtuous and deeply religious Madame Tourvel. Eventually, when her Madame Tourvel falls in love with her, she coldly announces her separation from him, which causes her Madame Tourvel to die.
