"Arthur Mervyn; or, Memoirs of the Year 1793" is a novel written by American author Charles Brockden Brown. Published in 1799, it is one of the earliest works of American Gothic fiction. The novel is set in Philadelphia during the yellow fever epidemic of 1793, an actual historical event.

Summary
The novel is set in Philadelphia in 1793, when yellow fever was prevalent. The protagonist, Arthur Mervyn, is a young man who leaves his country home to visit the city. Upon arrival, he fell ill with yellow fever. He nursed her back to health under the care of a kind woman named Madame Villars, but upon her recovery he learns that she has died of her illness.
Mervyn then joins a group of con artists and criminals, putting him into a series of dangerous and unfortunate situations... .
