the Society has sponsored an annual sijo-writing contest, as well as workshops for teachers to explore ways to bring the sijo into their classrooms. The SCS website provides information, articles, video lectures, performances, and other materials to assist learning about the sijo, writing it and teaching others how to write it.
The present volume brings these resources and more into a single unified set for teachers and writers in Part Ⅰ and Ⅱ, followed by an array of sijo poems from the SCS’ annual contest.
The contributors to this volume have worked to promote a better understanding of Korean culture and history. I taught Korean literature at Cornell University and Harvard University and turned to writing my own sijo in English relatively recently. My chapter explores sijo’s performance dimensions, not only as a verse form that was sung, but also as a dramatically active, engaged form of literary culture.

아시아계 작가로는 최초로 2002년 『사금파리 한 조각』으로 뉴베리상을 수상했다. 한국 이민자 부부 사이에서 태어난 린다 수 박은 동양인이라는 이유로 수많은 차별을 겪으며 성장했다. 정체성에 혼돈을 느끼던 어린 시절 로라 잉걸스 와일더의 ‘초원의 집’을 거듭 읽으며 언젠가 완벽한 미국인이 되기를 소망했다. 스탠퍼드 대학에서 영문학을 전공했고 석유 회사의 홍보 담당, 광고 회사 직원, 요리 전문 기고가, 영어 교사로도 일했다. 부모가 된 후 자신의 뿌리인 한국과 한국의 문화에 대해 두 자녀에게 전하고 싶다는 생각을 하며 뒤늦게 한국을 소재로 삼은 동화를 쓰기 시작했다. 한국 이름은 박명진이다.

미국 일리노이 주에서 나고 자랐지만, 한국인 부모님을 둔 한국계 미국인이다. 스탠포드대학 영문학과 졸업 후, 저널리스트, 카피라이터, 대학 영어 강사 등의 다양한 직업을 거쳤다. 부모님에게 들은 한국 옛날이야기를 밑바탕으로 동화를 쓰기 시작했으며, 고려청자 이야기를 담은 세 번째 장편 동화 『사금파리 한 조각』으로 2002년 뉴베리 상을 수상했다. 작품으로는 『뽕나무 프로젝트』,『내 이름이 교코였을 때』, 『연싸움』 등이 있다. 지금은 뉴욕에서 작품 작업과 강연 활동 중이다.
