Summary
Burdened by the limitations of provincial life and driven by his literary aspirations, Richard leaves his hometown of Bursley for the bustling metropolis. He struggles with poverty, loneliness, and disillusionment as he tries to establish himself as a writer. Through his struggles, the novel addresses themes of ambition, class, and the nature of artistic success.

He had visited London before, once before, and then only for a few hours, but the topography of the city was not new to him, as he often studied it from maps and old copies of Kelly's directories.
