Summary
The novel follows Henry's life from his childhood in a small English town to his ultimate fame and fortune. Henry is a good-natured but somewhat naive person who is satisfied with a simple life. He works as a shorthand clerk for a local attorney and enjoys spending time with his family and friends. But when he is inspired to write a novel, Henry's life takes an unexpected turn.
Mr. Knight is writing in a large book. He paused in the middle of his writing and scanned the pages of the book with his pen between his teeth. It was filled with drafts of letters he had sent over the past seven years to the editors of the Times and other newspapers, some of which were great in their day but are now extinct. A printed copy was neatly glued into the space beneath each letter, but here and there the letters lacked this certificate of success. Because Mr. Knight didn't always try to reach the public.
