Summary
The captain, a yachtsman and Dutchman, smiled calmly and confidently as we approached the Dutch border on an August evening, crossing the heavily populated waters of the canal that runs from Ghent to Terneusen. He could not stay in Belgium, perhaps because Belgium is in some ways similar to the Netherlands. In his opinion, Belgian officials do not understand yachts and respect for them, while Dutch officials do.
