Summary
The story is set in the fictional town of Clayton, somewhat similar to the Potteries region of Staffordshire, England, which was the setting for many of Bennett's novels. The novel explores the life and experiences of Hugo, a young man who becomes a successful and wealthy manufacturer. But Hugo is not satisfied with his success, and his novel takes a surreal turn as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery and existential questions.
He awoke from a charming dream in which the hat played a prominent role.
'I guess I wouldn't mind having that hat,' he muttered.
While he was lying in bed, a darkness that not even an eye could penetrate surrounded him. Absolute obscurity was essential to the rest of that particular brain, and he perfected provisions for supplying the wants of nature's night.
