▶ 하얀 침묵 1899(The White Silence) : 캐나다 유콘(Yukon)을 배경으로 하는 잭 런던의 단편 소설(Short Story)로, 봄이 오기 전에 유콘 강의 노스랜드 트레일(the Northland Trail on the Yukon)을 횡단하는 중년 남성 메이슨(Mason), 메이슨의 아내 루쓰(Ruth), 말레뮤트 키드(Malemute kid) 세 사람의 이야기입니다. 단편소설가 잭 런던을 대표하는 걸작으로, 1899년 오버랜드 먼쓸리(Overland Monthly)를 통해 최초로 공개된 후 작가의 여러 단행본을 통해 출판되었습니다.

▶ An hour passed?two hours?but the man would not die. At high noon the sun, without raising its rim above the southern horizon, threw a suggestion of fire athwart the heavens, then quickly drew it back. Malemute Kid roused and dragged himself to his comrade's side. He cast one glance about him. The White Silence seemed to sneer, and a great fear came upon him. There was a sharp report; Mason swung into his aerial sepulcher, and Malemute Kid lashed the dogs into a wild gallop as he fled across the snow.

▶ 성직자의 특권　2021(The Priestly Prerogative) : 에드윈 벤담(Edwin Bentham)과 그레이스 벤담(Grace Bentham)은 황금을 찾아 유콘 강 일대를 헤매는 떠돌이 부부입니다. 소들이 도살된 후 대량으로 벼려진 모습을 본 부부는 굶주린 개 탐험가들(dog-teams)에게 뼈와 가죽을 싸게 팔면서 연명했습니다. 6개월간 악착같이 돈을 모은 그들은 유콘 강이 녹는 시기에 맞춰 사우스랜드(the Southland)로 다시 한 번 여행길에 오릅니다. 그러나 가진 것　없을 때 서로 돈독했던 부부 사이는 약간의 부로 인하여 오히려 멀어지게 되는데……. 그레이스 벤담은 클라이드 와튼(Clyde Wharton)과 애틋한 감정은 품게 되었고, 루보 신부(Father Roubeau)는 이를 경계하고자 노력하지만……. 과연 세 남녀의 운명은 어떻게 될까요?

▶ This is the story of a man who did not appreciate his wife; also, of a woman who did him too great an honor when she gave herself to him. Incidentally, it concerns a Jesuit priest who had never been known to lie. He was an appurtenance, and a very necessary one, to the Yukon country; but the presence of the other two was merely accidental. They were specimens of the many strange waifs which ride the breast of a gold rush or come tailing along behind.

▶ 트레일의 지혜　1900(The Wisdom of the Trail) :　Sitka Charley had achieved the impossible. Other Indians might have known as much of the wisdom of the trail as he did; but he alone knew the white man's wisdom, the honor of the trail, and the law. But these things had not come to him in a day. The aboriginal mind is slow to generalize, and many facts, repeated often, are required to compass an understanding. Sitka Charley, from boyhood, had been thrown continually with white men, and as a man he had elected to cast his fortunes with them, expatriating himself, once and for all, from his own people.

▷ 시트카 찰리는 불가능한 일을 성취했습니다. 다른 인디언들도 그만큼 이 길의 지혜를 많이 알고 있었을 것입니다. 그러나 그만이 백인의 지혜와 길의 명예와 법을 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 이러한 일이 하루아침에 그에게 임한 것은 아니었습니다. 원주민의 마음은 일반화하는 데 느리기 때문에 이해를 돕기 위해서는 자주 반복되는 많은 사실이 필요합니다. 시트카 찰리는 어린 시절부터 계속해서 백인들과 어울려 살았고, 한 남자로서 그는 그들과 함께 자신의 재산을 던지기로 결정했고, 자신을 단번에 동족에게서 추방했습니다.

▶ 왕의 아내　1899(The Wife of a King) :　Once when the northland was very young, the social and civic virtues were remarkably alike for their paucity and their simplicity. When the burden of domestic duties grew grievous, and the fireside mood expanded to a constant protest against its bleak loneliness, the adventurers from the Southland, in lieu of better, paid the stipulated prices and took unto themselves native wives. It was a foretaste of Paradise to the women, for it must be confessed that the white rovers gave far better care and treatment of them than did their Indian copartners.

▷ 한때 노스랜드가 아주 젊었을 때 사회적, 시민적 덕목은 부족함과 단순함으로 인해 놀라울 정도로 비슷했습니다. 집안일의 부담이 점점 더 커지고 노변의 분위기가 그 황량한 외로움에 대한 끊임없는 항의로 확대되자 사우스랜드의 모험가들은 더 나은 대신에 규정된 가격을 지불하고 원주민 아내를 맞이했습니다. 그것은 여자들에게 천국을 미리 맛본 것이었습니다. 왜냐하면 흰 탐사선들이 인도 동료들보다 그들을 훨씬 더 잘 보살피고 대접했다는 것을 고백해야 하기 때문입니다.
