▶ 갈색 늑대 1906(Brown Wolf) : In build and coat and brush he was a huge timber-wolf; but the lie was given to his wolf-hood by his color and marking. There the dog unmistakably advertised itself. No wolf was ever colored like him. He was brown, deep brown, red-brown, an orgy of browns. Back and shoulders were a warm brown that paled on the sides and underneath to a yellow that was dingy because of the brown that lingered in it. The white of the throat and paws and the spots over the eyes was dirty because of the persistent and ineradicable brown, while the eyes themselves were twin topazes, golden and brown.

▷ 체격과 외투와 브러시에서 그는 거대한 동부 늑대(timber-wolf)였습니다. 그러나 그의 색깔과 무늬로 인해 그의 늑대라는 거짓말이 드러났습니다. 그곳에서 그 개는 틀림없이 자기 자신을 광고했습니다. 어떤 늑대도 그와 같은 색을 띠지 않았습니다. 그는 갈색, 짙은 갈색, 적갈색, 갈색의 난교였습니다. 등과 어깨는 따뜻한 갈색이었고 측면과 아래쪽은 그 안에 남아 있는 갈색 때문에 거무죽죽한 노란색으로 변했습니다. 목과 발의 흰색과 눈 위의 반점은 지속적이고 지울 수 없는 갈색으로 인해 더러워졌고, 눈 자체는 황금색과 갈색의 쌍둥이 황옥이었습니다.

▶ 변덕스러운 남복 1902(Nam-Bok The Unveracious) : "And likewise, thou fool, I said money was a thing of which you know nothing. As I say, I rode the monster through the land, and through many villages, until I came to a big village on a salt arm of the sea. And the houses shoved their roofs among the stars in the sky, and the clouds drifted by them, and everywhere was much smoke. And the roar of that village was like the roar of the sea in storm, and the people were so many that I flung away my stick and no longer remembered the notches upon it.“

▶ ９번째 단편 왕을 위한 코　1906(A Nose For The King)은 한국의 조선을 배경으로, 이진호라는 이름의 부정부패한 정치인이 등장하는 작품입니다. 19세기 미국 작가의 한국을 배경으로 한 단편소설이라니……. 잭 런던의 방대한 세계관을 엿볼 수 있는 흥미로운 작풍이 아닐 수 없습니다. 막대한 빚을 지고 사형에 선고된 이진호는 왕의 병을 치료하기 위해, 특이한 코를 찾아내야만 하는데……. 과연 이진호의 모험은 성과를 낼 수 있을까요?

▶　왕을 위한 코　1906(A Nose For The King)　：　In the morning calm of Korea, when its peace and tranquillity truly merited its ancient name, “Cho-sen,” there lived a politician by name Yi Chin Ho. He was a man of parts, and?who shall say??perhaps in no wise worse than politicians the world over. But, unlike his brethren in other lands, Yi Chin Ho was in jail. Not that he had inadvertently diverted to himself public moneys, but that he had inadvertently diverted too much. Excess is to be deplored in all things, even in grafting, and Yi Chin Ho's excess had brought him to most deplorable straits.

▷ 한국의 고요한 아침, 그 평화와 고요함이 진정으로 '조센'이라는 고대 이름에 걸맞은 때, 이진호라는 이름의 정치인이 살았습니다. 그는 부분적인 사람이었고, 누가 말할 수 있겠습니까? 아마도 전 세계의 정치인들보다 나쁘지 않을 것입니다. 그러나 다른 나라의 형제들과는 달리 이진호는 감옥에 갇혀 있었습니다. 그가 본의 아니게 공공 자금을 자신에게 전용한 것이 아니라, 그가 본의 아니게 너무 많은 돈을 전용했다는 것입니다. 지나친 것은 모든 일에 있어서 개탄할 일이며, 심지어 접목에 있어서도 이진호의 과잉은 그를 가장 한탄스러운 곤경에 빠뜨렸습니다.
