▶ I. THE TASTE OF THE MEAT. : In the beginning he was Christopher Bellew. By the time he was at college he had become Chris Bellew. Later, in the Bohemian crowd of San Francisco, he was called Kit Bellew. And in the end he was known by no other name than Smoke Bellew. And this history of the evolution of his name is the history of his evolution. Nor would it have happened had he not had a fond mother and an iron uncle, and had he not received a letter from Gillet Bellamy.

▶ III. THE STAMPEDE TO SQUAW CREEK. : Two months after Smoke Bellew and Shorty went after moose for a grub-stake, they were back in the Elkhorn saloon at Dawson. The hunting was done, the meat hauled in and sold for two dollars and a half a pound, and between them they possessed three thousand dollars in gold dust and a good team of dogs. They had played in luck. Despite the fact that the gold-rush had driven the game a hundred miles or more into the mountains, they had, within half that distance, bagged four moose in a narrow canyon.
▷ III. 스콰우 크릭으로 향하는 인파(The Stampede To Squaw Creek). : 스모크 벨류와 쇼티가 무스 사냥을 위해 무스를 쫓아간 지 두 달 후, 그들은 도슨의 엘크혼 술집으로 돌아왔습니다. 사냥이 끝났고, 고기를 가져와서 2달러 반 파운드에 팔았고, 그들 사이에는 3천 달러의 금가루와 좋은 개떼가 있었습니다. 그들은 운이 좋았습니다. 골드러시로 인해 게임이 100마일 이상 산 속으로 몰아갔음에도 불구하고 그들은 그 거리의 절반 이내의 좁은 협곡에 네 마리의 무스를 품고 있었습니다.
▶ VIII. THE HANGING OF CULTUS GEORGE. : The way led steeply up through deep, powdery snow that was unmarred by sled-track or moccasin impression. Smoke, in the lead, pressed the fragile crystals down under his fat, short snow-shoes. The task required lungs and muscle, and he flung himself into it with all his strength. Behind, on the surface he packed, strained the string of six dogs, the steam-jets of their breathing attesting their labor and the lowness of the temperature. Between the wheel-dog and the sled toiled Shorty, his weight divided between the guiding gee-pole and the haul, for he was pulling with the dogs. Every half-hour he and Smoke exchanged places, for the snow-shoe work was even more arduous than that of the gee-pole.
▷ Ⅷ. 컬투스 조지의 교수형. : 길은 썰매 트랙이나 모카신 흔적이 전혀 없는 깊고 가루 같은 눈을 통해 가파르게 올라갔습니다. 선두에 선 스모크는 그의 뚱뚱하고 짧은 눈신 아래 깨지기 쉬운 수정을 눌러 눌렀습니다. 그 일에는 폐와 근육이 필요했고, 그는 온 힘을 다해 그 일에 몸을 던졌습니다. 뒤쪽, 표면에는 여섯 마리의 개들이 줄을 팽팽하게 묶고 있었는데, 그들의 숨결에서 나오는 증기는 그들의 노동과 낮은 기온을 증명했습니다. 바퀴 달린 개와 썰매를 끄는 쇼티 사이에서 쇼티의 무게는 안내하는 지느러미와 운반자 사이에 나누어졌습니다. 왜냐하면 그가 개들과 함께 당기고 있었기 때문입니다. 30분마다 그와 스모크는 자리를 바꾸었는데, 눈신을 신는 작업은 지폴 작업보다 훨씬 더 힘들었기 때문입니다.

The best of them is frivolous, when they ain't foolish. And they's cats, all of 'em, the littlest an' the biggest, the nicest and the otherwise. They're sure devourin' lions an' roarin' hyenas when they get on the trail of a man they've cottoned to.”
▷ XII. 여성의 경이로움. : “저쪽에 있는 북극광을 눈을 들어 보세요.” 쇼티가 말을 이었습니다. “좀 경솔한데요? 멍청하고 셔츠를 입고 춤추는 여자처럼요. 그들 중 최고는 어리석지 않더라도 경솔합니다. 그리고 그들은 모두 고양이입니다. 가장 작은 것, 가장 큰 것, 가장 좋은 것, 그렇지 않은 것입니다. 그들은 목화로 만든 사람의 흔적을 따라가면 사자와 포효하는 하이에나를 잡아먹을 것이 확실합니다.”
