▶ PREFACE. It surely is time that the capitalists knew something about this socialism that they feel menaces them. And it is the hope of the writer that the socialistic studies in this volume may in some slight degree enlighten a few capitalistic minds. The capitalist must learn, first and for always, that socialism is based, not upon the equality, but upon the inequality, of men. Next, he must learn that no new birth into spiritual purity is necessary before socialism becomes possible.

▷ 머리말. 자본가들이 자신들을 위협한다고 느끼는 사회주의에 대해 이제 확실히 알아야 할 때입니다. 그리고 이 책의 사회주의 연구가 소수의 자본주의적 정신을 어느 정도 깨달을 수 있다는 것이 작가의 희망입니다. 자본가는 사회주의가 인간의 평등이 아니라 불평등에 기초하고 있다는 사실을 무엇보다도 항상 배워야 한다. 다음으로, 그는 사회주의가 가능해지기 전에 영적인 순수함으로 새로 태어날 필요가 없다는 것을 배워야 합니다.

▶ THE CLASS STRUGGLE. It remains to be seen how promptly the capitalist class will respond to the call to arms. Upon its promptness rests its existence, for if it sits idly by, soothfully proclaiming that what ought not to be cannot be, it will find the roof beams crashing about its head. The capitalist class is in the numerical minority, and bids fair to be outvoted if it does not put a stop to the vast propaganda being waged by its enemy. It is no longer a question of whether or not there is a class struggle. The question now is, what will be the outcome of the class struggle?

▷ 계급 투쟁. 자본가 계급이 얼마나 즉각적으로 무기 동원 요구에 반응할지는 두고 볼 일입니다. 그 신속성에 그 존재가 달려 있습니다. 만약 그것이 멍하니 앉아 있으면 안 되는 것이 있을 수 없다고 다정하게 선언한다면, 지붕 들보가 머리 주위에서 부서지는 것을 발견할 것이기 때문입니다. 자본가 계급은 수적으로 소수에 속하며, 적에 의해 행해지는 막대한 선전을 중단시키지 못한다면 찬성표를 받는 것이 공평합니다. 계급 투쟁의 존재 여부는 더 이상 문제가 되지 않습니다. 이제 문제는 계급투쟁의 결과가 무엇인가 하는 것입니다.

▶ THE TRAMP. And, while it is not nice that these men should die, it is ordained that they must die, and we should not quarrel with them if they cumber our highways and kitchen stoops with their perambulating carcasses. This is a form of elimination we not only countenance but compel. Therefore let us be cheerful and honest about it. Let us be as stringent as we please with our police regulations, but for goodness’ sake let us refrain from telling the tramp to go to work. Not only is it unkind, but it is untrue and hypocritical. We know there is no work for him. As the scapegoat to our economic and industrial sinning, or to the plan of things, if you will, we should give him credit. Let us be just. He is so made. Society made him. He did not make himself.

▶ THE SCAB. In a competitive society, where men struggle with one another for food and shelter, what is more natural than that generosity, when it diminishes the food and shelter of men other than he who is generous, should be held an accursed thing? Wise old saws to the contrary, he who takes from a man’s purse takes from his existence. To strike at a man’s food and shelter is to strike at his life; and in a society organized on a tooth-and-nail basis, such an act, performed though it may be under the guise of generosity, is none the less menacing and terrible.

▷ 딱지. 사람들이 식량과 주거지를 위해 서로 투쟁하는 경쟁 사회에서, 관대한 사람 이외의 사람들의 식량과 주거지를 감소시키는 관대함이 저주받은 것으로 간주되어야 한다는 것보다 더 자연스러운 것이 어디 있겠습니까? 현명한 늙은이는 반대로 사람의 지갑을 빼앗는 자는 그의 존재를 빼앗는다고 생각합니다. 사람의 음식과 피난처를 공격하는 것은 그의 생명을 공격하는 것입니다. 그리고 철저하게 조직된 사회에서, 관대함을 가장하여 행해지는 그러한 행위는 그럼에도 불구하고 위협적이고 끔찍합니다.
