The text was recorded from Darja Mixajlovna Osenina, one of the last great Tungusic storytellers, by A.L. Malchukov 1991 during his fieldwork in the village Topolinoe in the Tompo region of Yakutia (Republic of Sakha). This is the first publication of a Tungusic epic tale in English, which is intended for international readership interested in the culture and language of Ewens. The linguistic audience is not confined to experts in Tungusic languages, but also caters for typologists and general linguists interested in Siberian languages: for this reason the text is provided with glosses in accordance with typological practice. In addition to the glossed text and the English translation, the publication includes the Ewen text in the standard Cyrillic orthography along with the Russian translation intended for the use in the Ewen community.
