"Mosses from an Old Manse" is a collection of short stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne, first published in 1846. The title refers to the Old Manse, a historic home in Concord, Massachusetts, where Hawthorne lived for a time. The collection is considered one of Hawthorne's major works and contains some of his most celebrated stories.
The stories in "Mosses from an Old Manse" cover a wide range of themes, including morality, sin, guilt, and the complexities of human nature. Hawthorne's writing is characterized by its rich symbolism, moral ambiguity, and exploration of the dark aspects of the human psyche.

Some of the notable stories included in "Mosses from an Old Manse" are:

1. "The Birth-Mark": This story explores the theme of perfection and its consequences. It tells the tale of a scientist who becomes obsessed with removing a birthmark from his wife's face, believing it to be a flaw that mars her beauty.

2. "Young Goodman Brown": Considered one of Hawthorne's masterpieces, this story delves into the themes of sin, temptation, and the loss of innocence. It follows the journey of a young man named Goodman Brown as he ventures into the forest one night and encounters various characters who challenge his beliefs and morals.

3. "Rappaccini's Daughter": This tale examines the dangers of unchecked ambition and the consequences of playing God. It tells the story of a young man named Giovanni Guasconti who falls in love with Beatrice, the daughter of the scientist Dr. Rappaccini, only to discover that she has been poisoned by her father's experiments.

Summary
The Author makes the Reader acquainted with his Abode.
Between two tall gate-posts of rough-hewn stone (the gate itself having fallen from its hinges at some unknown epoch) we beheld the gray front of the old parsonage, terminating the vista of an avenue of black-ash trees. It was now a twelvemonth since the funeral procession of the venerable clergyman, its last inhabitant, had turned from that gateway towards the village burying-ground. The wheel-track leading to the door, as well as the whole breadth of the avenue, was almost overgrown with grass, affording dainty mouthfuls to two or three vagrant cows and an old white horse who had his own living to pick up along the roadside.
