"Other Stories of the Great Rock Face and the White Mountain" is a collection of short stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne first published in 1850. The title story, ¡°The Great Rock Face,¡± is perhaps the best known and famous work.
¡®The Great Rock Face¡¯ tells the story of Ernest, a young boy who lives in a valley beneath a mountain where there is a natural rock formation that resembles the face of a noble sage. According to local legend, it is prophesied that a person with a striking resemblance to a large rock face will rise from the valley and bring great wisdom and goodness to the community.
Throughout the story, Ernest grows up inspired by the legend and believes that one day he will meet the person who will fulfill the prophecy. However, as he gets older, Ernest becomes disheartened to see the various people in the valley who are admired for their achievements, but none of them can compare to the greatness of the great rock face.
The story is ultimately about themes of identity, destiny, and the nature of true greatness, as well as idealism and the search for goodness and wisdom in the world.
Other stories in the collection also feature themes of nature, legend, and morality, often set against the backdrop of New Hampshire's picturesque White Mountains. Hawthorne's prose in this story is characterized by lyrical beauty, rich symbolism, and moral depth.

Summary
One afternoon, when the sun was going down, a mother and her little boy sat at the door of their cottage, talking about the Great Stone Face. They had but to lift their eyes, and there it was plainly to be seen, though miles away, with the sunshine brightening all its features. And what was the Great Stone Face? Embosomed amongst a family of lofty mountains, there was a valley so spacious that it contained many thousand inhabitants. Some of these good people dwelt in log-huts, with the black forest all around them, on the steep and difficult hillsides. Others had their homes in comfortable farm-houses, and cultivated the rich soil on the gentle slopes or level surfaces of the valley.
