"The Threefold Destiny" is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, first published in 1843 as part of his collection "Mosses from an Old Manse". This collection consists of a series of stories that explore themes of morality, fate, and the complexities of human nature.
As the story unfolds, the characters' lives become increasingly intertwined, and they struggle to escape the fate foretold by the prophecy. Despite their efforts to change their fate, they are ultimately ensnared by the forces of fate and circumstances.
The "The Threefold Destiny" characterize Hawthorne's exploration of moral ambiguity and the consequences of human action. It deals with the themes of predestination, free will, and the power of prophecy to determine the direction of human life.
Hawthorne's prose is descriptive and evocative, creating a haunting atmosphere that heightens the sense of inevitability surrounding the characters' fates. This story is a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of fate and the fragility of human existence.

Summary
I have sometimes produced a singular and not unpleasing effect, so far as my own mind was concerned, by imagining a train of incidents, in which the spirit and mechanism of the fairy legend should be combined with the characters and manners of familiar life. In the little tale which follows, a subdued tinge of the wild and wonderful is thrown over a sketch of New England personages and scenery, yet, it is hoped, without entirely obliterating the sober hues of nature.
