“THE GENTLE BOY”는 Nathaniel Hawthorne의 또 다른 단편 소설로, 1835년 그의 컬렉션 "Twice-Told Tales"에도 출판되었다.
이 이야기는 청교도 시대 뉴잉글랜드를 배경으로 퀘이커교도 어머니 캐서린과 그녀의 아들 일브라힘에 관한 이야기다.
캐서린은 종교적 신념으로 인해 투옥과 유배를 당하고, 아들 일브라힘은 퍼슨 부부에게 맡겨진다. 퍼슨 부부는 일브라힘을 사랑으로 돌보지만, 편견에 찬 마을 사람들로부터 냉대를 받는다.
어느 날 캐서린이 풀려나 아들을 찾아오지만 일브라힘은 이미 병들어 죽어가고 있었다. 일브라힘은 어머니와 재회한 후 평화롭게 숨을 거둔다.
이후 왕의 명령으로 퀘이커교도에 대한 박해는 중단되지만 여전히 차별은 계속된다. 하지만 시간이 흐르면서 사람들의 태도는 조금씩 누그러졌고, 캐서린은 마을에 정착해 슬픔 속에서도 관용을 베풀며 살아간다.

“THE GENTLE BOY” is another short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, also published in his collection “Twice-Told Tales” in 1835.
This story is set in New England during the Puritan era and tells the story of a Quaker mother, Catherine, and her son, Ilbrahim.
Catherine is imprisoned and exiled for her religious beliefs, and her son Ilbrahim is left in the care of the Persons. The Persons care for Ilbrahim with love, but they receive cold treatment from the prejudiced villagers.
One day, Catherine is released and comes to visit her son, but Ilbrahim was already sick and dying. Ilbrahim dies peacefully after being reunited with his mother.
Afterwards, the king's order stopped the persecution of Quakers, but discrimination continued. However, as time passes, people's attitudes soften slightly, and Catherine settles down in the village, where they live with her tolerance even in the midst of her grief.
Her villagers also gradually came to understand and sympathize with her, and when Catherine passed away, many attended her funeral and shed tears.
This work delicately depicts the religious conflict in Puritan society, the resulting tragedy, and the human mind that slowly changes over time.

In the course of the year 1656 several of the people called Quakers?led, as they professed, by the inward movement of the spirit?made their appearance in New England. Their reputation as holders of mystic and pernicious principles having spread before them, the Puritans early endeavored to banish and to prevent the further intrusion of the rising sect. But the measures by which it was intended to purge the land of heresy, though more than sufficiently vigorous, were entirely unsuccessful.
