¡°THE GREAT CARBUNCLE¡± is another short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, also published in his collection ¡°Twice-Told Tales¡± in 1835.
This story is about people who ventured to Crystal Hill to find a mysterious and great gem called the Great Carbuncle.
People looking for gems for different reasons, including old people, doctors, merchants, poets, nobles, and young couples, spend a night at the foot of Crystal Hill and talk about what they will do if they get the gems.
Only a young couple united by devoted love was able to reach the place where the jewel was located the next morning, and they came face to face with the magnificently shining Great Carbuncle. However, the brilliance is so strong that they tremble in fear and embrace each other, realizing that a simple and peaceful life is greater happiness, so they give up the jewel.
It is said that no one has seen the Great Carbuncle since they came down, and the brilliance of the gem itself is not the same as before. However, those who still believe in the legend of the Great Carbuncle set out to find the gem, saying they saw a flashing light at Crystal Hill.
The author concludes the story by confessing that he, too, was one of the pilgrims who set out to find the Great Carbuncle, guided by the poem's beliefs.

Summary
At nightfall once in the olden time, on the rugged side of one of the Crystal Hills, a party of adventurers were refreshing themselves after a toilsome and fruitless quest for the Great Carbuncle. They had come thither, not as friends nor partners in the enterprise, but each, save one youthful pair, impelled by his own selfish and solitary longing for this wondrous gem. Their feeling of brotherhood, however, was strong enough to induce them to contribute a mutual aid in building a rude hut of branches and kindling a great fire of shattered pines that had drifted down the headlong current of the Amonoosuck,¡¦
