¡°PETER GOLDTHWAITE¡¯S TREASURE¡± is another short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, also published in his collection ¡°Twice-Told Tales¡± in 1835.
Peter Goldthwait believes his ancestors' treasures are hidden somewhere in his home. He begins to demolish the house in search of treasure, but in the end all he finds is worthless paper money and bonds from an older generation. His business partner, John Brown, feels sorry for Peter's situation and wants to take him to his home. This story shows the difference in perception of wealth and reality, and the conflict between fantasy and reality. Although Peter's treasure hunting efforts end in vain, he still does not lose hope for the future.

Summary
¡°And so, Peter, you won¡¯t even consider of the business?¡± said Mr. John Brown, buttoning his surtout over the snug rotundity of his person and drawing on his gloves. ¡°You positively refuse to let me have this crazy old house, and the land under and adjoining, at the price named?¡±
