¡°THE AMBITIOUS GUEST¡± is another short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, also published in his collection ¡°Twice-Told Tales¡± in 1835.
The story depicts a family living peacefully in a cabin in the rugged mountains of the White Hills.
One evening, a young traveler with ambitious dreams comes to visit their home. He sits with his family, talks about their hopes and dreams in life, and especially connects with the family's daughter.
The family also talks about their simple dreams and wishes, creating a friendly atmosphere. My grandmother even shared a strange wish that she would look neat when she died and went into her coffin.
However, this peaceful atmosphere does not last long. A landslide occurs and the cabin and family are swept away at once. It becomes impossible to know whether the traveler is alive or dead.
The next morning, smoke rises from the cabin chimney and traces of the disaster are found, but no body is found. The author concludes the story by mentioning that their tragic fate will be sung by poets.
This story contains the themes of humans' fleeting dreams and desires, and that unexpected death can come at any time. In the end, the pain experienced by the unknown traveler is also left as an eternal mystery.

Summary
One September night a family had gathered round their hearth and piled it high with the driftwood of mountain-streams, the dry cones of the pine, and the splintered ruins of great trees that had come crashing down the precipice. Up the chimney roared the fire, and brightened the room with its broad blaze. The faces of the father and mother had a sober gladness; the children laughed. The eldest daughter was the image of Happiness at seventeen, and the aged grandmother, who sat knitting in the warmest place, was the image of Happiness grown old. They had found the ¡°herb heart¡¯s-ease¡± in the bleakest spot of all New England.
